2006 Dancing Rabbit Internship Application

Thanks for your interest in Dancing Rabbit's internship program. 'Application' may not be the best word for this, since we would basically just like you to tell us something about yourself. Don't worry, we're not here to grade you on your grammar! But, the more we know about you, the better. Just answer the questions below the best you can, clearly and honestly.

Some basic information about Dancing Rabbit can be found on our website at http://www.dancingrabbit.org. Feel free to contact us at 1 Dancing Rabbit Lane, Rutledge, MO, 63563, 660-883-5511, dancingrabbit@ic.org if you have any other questions or need more information about the work exchange program or about Dancing Rabbit in general.

We do not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sexual orientation, educational background, or religion. ________________________________________________________________________

  • How old are you, and what's your gender?

I'm a 25-year old male.

  • Which internship position(s) are you interested in?

I'd like to do the general internship so that I can help out in many different areas.

  • What dates are you available?

We (my partner and I) would like to come out for 6-8 weeks between May and July

  • How did you find out about our internship program?

through your website

  • Why are you interested in Dancing Rabbit?

I'm interested in seeing what community life is like and how it works. I'm interested in the problems and solutions that the members of Dancing Rabbit have experienced on their journey. I'm interested in the social/political makeup of the Dancing Rabbit community - how interactions work among the members and within each subcoop and how decisions are made. I'm interested in the economic workings of the community - including the complementary currency. In short, I'm interested in EVERYTHING about Dancing Rabbit! :)

  • Why are you interested in an internship at Dancing Rabbit? Also, why are

you interested in the particular internship (e.g. garden, construction) that you are applying for? I want to experience first-hand what life is like in an intentional community. I would like to learn about and experience as many aspects of life and work at Dancing Rabbit as possible.

  • Please describe what you think you have to offer. What personal

qualities, skills and/or experience (e.g., work experience, workshops, classes, reading) would you bring? I am a very quick learner, able to generalize patterns and processes very quickly. I am also very detail-oriented and analytical/methodical in my approach to problem solving. I have worked as a computer programmer and computer support technician so I am very good at design of rule-based systems and problem solving. I have taken a week-long introductory course in permaculture which included the construction of a cob oven, compost pile, rainwater catchment system and pond. I have also taken a couple 25-hour classes on herbal medicine, including botany for identification of wild plants, and overviews of preparations, body systems, and energetic medicine.

  • What do you hope to learn at Dancing Rabbit?

I hope to learn what life is like at DR for the rabbits. What problems you encounter, what victories you have had, your visions for the future, why you are each there. I hope to learn what it is like to live in a community, if only for a little while, which focuses on real human relationships and getting the most out of life.

  • Please tell us a bit about the work conditions that best suit you. Are

there certain approaches to learning that work better or worse for you? Do you prefer a lot of direct guidance or to work on your own? Do you have any expectations for your supervisor, or any particular qualities you would like to see in a supervisor? I learn best by asking questions. Once a task has been explained, I usually ask questions to figure out the general process, and then am able to work on my own. I like supervisors who are laid-back, flexible, respectful and eager to help.

  • How do you stay motivated in your work?

I find small victories rewarding. Completing a task or seeing appreciation for the results of my efforts keeps me motivated.

  • If you've ever been in charge of or initiated a project, please tell us

about that experience. I have held several leadership positions through my life, in a youth group as a teenager, in clubs in high school, and more recently as a manager in a computer lab. In my roles as a leader, I always tried to be more of a facilitator - helping others to come to a collective decision about what to do and how to do it, and then overseeing the organizational details, making sure that duties were split and assigned and that everything happened according to the budget and/or schedule.

  • In order to get to know you better, please tell us something about

yourself (hobbies, passions, pastimes, etc.). I enjoy logical systems - hence the work with computers - but including systems-level studies of society and the "rules" by which we live. I enjoy thinking about things from many perspectives, and learning how to do things better. I like exploring the new cultural possibilities which are enabled by the internet. I am interested in self-sustainability to satisfy my needs with less, and to build my autonomy. I'm interested in in living in community for mental health and well-being, and to aid in sustainability. I fancy myself a writer, but rarely write anything very long.

  • Do you have any allergies, food restrictions, or physical limitations

that might affect your ability to live in the country and work at Dancing Rabbit? Not that I know of.

  • Dancing Rabbit plans to grow into a town with a variety of people and

cultures represented. However, at this point in time, the project is still young and the current group is a relatively small collection of individuals that you would have to be around and deal with daily. Dancing Rabbit's current culture is definitely oriented toward a rural "alternative" culture. We want to make sure that you are aware of what to expect before deciding to come live out here with us. While you would not be expected to believe in or actively participate in all of the things on the list below, you should be aware that they are all things that are commonly encountered at Dancing Rabbit today. We realize some of this may sound completely "out there", but we'd like to hear your thoughts on the following: vegan food, nudity, leftist politics, hosting many visitors, children, dogs, outdoor living, physical work, consensus process, resolving interpersonal conflict by talking with the person you're in conflict with, peeing outside, outhouses and outdoor solar showers.

Sounds like my perfect vacation! I don't know any full-time nudists, but it does not disturb me. I haven't had a chance to use a solar shower yet, but it sounds like fun. Everything else is totally cool.

  • Is there anything else you might like to add that didn't fit in the above?

April and I are setting out at the beginning of February 2006 to travel around the country visiting sustainable communities, work on organic farms through WWOOF, and visit friends and family. We will be blogging our journey at www.nomadicscribe.net with journal entries, pictures and occasionally videos. I would love to do some interviews of Rabbits for the website, if any would like to be interviewed.

Please list two people (not relatives, if possible) who can tell us what it's like to work with you . These could be former co-workers, supervisors, teachers, etc. Please include their name, relationship to you, phone number and email if they have it.
