“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
-Gandhi
Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.

such a dramatic title… really, I’ve just finally figured out this thing enough to post something.
so as Benjamin would say Woo-hoo, here we go!
I’m at a good place in the gear research. my next step is to compose a complete list of all of the gear we’ll need, both gear we have and gear we still need to get.
I won’t truly know how well I did ’till we take our “test” camping trip after christmas.
The next research challenge will be figuring out a healthy, balanced diet on food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated or (for the most part) baked. If I’m successful, I’ll start a page on here for base-camp recipes.
If any of you folks out there in the inter-verse know of any good camp-cooking tips or recipes, send ‘em my way!
In case anyone is reading this thing already.
The state of our planning thus far-
April has done a lot of research into the Gear that we’ll need for the trip, including a hard-core tent, sub-zero sleeping bags, warm clothing, etc.
I have just registered both of us to join WWOOF USA so that we can get hooked up with some organic farms on our trip. I am in current contact with Dancing Rabbit regarding a 2-month internship, and will e-mail Twin Oaks and East Wind regarding their Visitor program, probably this week. I will also contact Earthaven Ecovillage. I want to find some additional communities for us to visit, hopefully some in the northeast (there’s got to be some in Oregon or Washington, right?).
BTW, if anyone wants to give me some advice or help to make the website look better, please do!
I’ve been playing around with the Google Maps API and it is surprisingly simple to use. The examples in the documentation are great. I have put together a map to aid us in planning our route. See the map here. The data points are driven from a custom-designed XML file and the icons are different depending on if the location is a community or just an individual friend/family member.
Welcome to the NomadicScribe.net weblog!
Not much here yet, still putting together the website. I hope the colors look ok. I’m not much of a visual artist. Planning for the trip is going well, although a little behind schedule. We’ve contacted 3 or 4 of the groups so far and probably eliminated another 2 or so. We will probably need to find some more communities to contact.
Registration is open to all so that anyone can comment on the entries. Only April and I can post, for now.
